This was my last painting project of 2012 and it turned out to be one of my favorites. Three little chairs for three sweet little girls!
I try to be finished with all furniture projects by Thanksgiving. The weather just gets too cold and the cars need to be back in the garage for winter. But just before Thanksgiving, I got a call from Chis asking if I would paint three little chairs for her to give to her granddaughters for Christmas. I hesitated, but only for a second. You know I just couldn't say no to that!
The chairs came from a local church rummage sale. I'd been to that very same sale and seen some really sad chairs. Luckily Chris had been there early and picked the three chairs in the very best condition.
I got lucky again when we had two really warm days in early December. After a good scrubbing and thorough sanding, each chair got three coats of paint. Chris asked for teal, purple and orange. Since the chairs were small, I was able to use sample pots of Behr's paint and primer in one. The colors are bright and happy and have fun names too - beach towel, citrus blast and wild grapes.
Chris likes the shabby chic look, so each chair got distressed and I love the way the layers of paint showed through. Then it got really cold and I had to finsh the chairs in my foyer.
It was kind of fun painting by the Christmas tree with holiday music playing!
I stenciled the names on each chair - one for Maggie, one for Myra and one for Iris. I tried out a few fonts till I found one that seemed just right. Then I followed up with two coats of wipe on poly. Even working in the house, it took forever for the poly to dry - another reason I don't love painting in the winter.
But they were all finished in time for Christmas. And I have to say, I totally fell in love with these little chairs. It just makes me smile thinking about Maggie, Myra and Iris enjoying them!

These are so sweet! A chair (and one so cute) is such a great gift idea! I love the colors you used and the names on them. Kids love seeing their name. What lucky girls to be getting them! Thanks for sharing!
These are so cute. I have a child's rocking chair that was my son's when he was a little one. Now that he has his own child I think it would make a great gift to re-do and give it to his daughter. I love your sight, would you please come by and link to my new Linky Party.

What fun little chairs! I taught pre-k for 19 years. I left when the school closed. I brought home a few wooden school chairs for the grands. Little did I know that I'd have to wait so long...The chairs are neatly tucked away just waiting. :)
Love the colors, and the font!
