Let's gossip!

You probably need to be of a certain age to remember the telephone table or gossip bench as it was more commonly called. Gossip benches were very popular in the 40's and 50's. Today it's hard to imagine that you actually had to sit in one spot to talk on the phone.  Phones were only as portable as the length of your cord.

At the time, the gossip bench was probably considered a very clever creation - a place to sit and a spot for the phone - all in one!

This Danish Modern style gossip bench arrived in my driveway as a freebie from a friend. Thanks so much Meghan! Of course it was brown and had a vinyl seat.

I painted it one white and added some much needed cushioning (for those long conversations).

And added a bright and happy fabric.

And what a handy little shelf a your phone book!

Cute, right?

And this Early American style gossip bench came from a flea market late in the day. The seller offered it to me for $2. Seriously, how could I say no to that?

This one went a nice bright shade of aqua.

I don't actually remember having a gossip bench when I was growing up. But I do remember sharing a party line. That was sometimes very entertaining!

But just for fun, I decided to give the gossip bench a try!

We've definitely come a long way baby!

Oh I remember those. They were quite the fashion back then. Our phone was on the wall in the kitchen, so no bench. Hugs, Marty

Soooo fun! I love them both, but am of course partial to the aqua one. Great job!

The aqua one is my favorite. And yes, it's hard to imagine sitting in one place to talk on the phone. It seems like another world.

I love them both! I've yet to find a good deal on a little gossip bench. For my modern day use I'd put this to work as my laptop desk. Internet surfing is close to conversation these days!

they are both adorable, cottagey and eclectic in their own right!

i love the danish one! my inlaws have one similar, but it folds into itself and then look like a little table only. does that description make sense, lol?

Oh wow, gossip benches were almost a status symbol in my family -- they did tend to talk a lot! My Nana & Great-Aunts had the more traditional kind, while ours was 'very modern' -- more like the Danish one here. They were all brown wood but the seats would get re-upolstered with new fabric every few years.

Thanks for awakening some old memories, Sharon!

Cute! I have a gossip bench in my kitchen. It's yellow. I like yours with the cute fabric on the seat. Well, I like the aqua one too but I've never seen one like the first, so it caught my eye.

They both look great! I'm glad you could use it. I didn't even know what it was! Hope your computer data transfer was eventually successful. - Meghan J.

What a great job you did on both of the 'Gossip Benches'. I've actually had one much like the Early American one you painted blue. Old habits are hard to break...I still find myself talking on the portable and staying in one place...looking for the cord to wind around my finger while I talk...LOL!!! Did you do that, too?

The upside to having the phone in one place was parents could eavesdrop on their kid's conversations ...

You really opened my memory bank. I worked 40 years for the telephone company, so I know all about these benches. I always thought they were neat.

I don't remember party lines but definitely remember gossip benches - although we just called them phone tables - love the term Gossip Bench :)
